High Alert for a Recession

Pag.34

America’s top finance chiefs are on high alert for a recession.

For the first time in several years, economic uncertainty is now their lead concern, replacing worries about the difficulty of hiring and retaining talented workers. Fifty-three percent of chief financial officers expect the United States to enter a recession prior to the 2020 presidential election, according to the Duke University/CFO Global Business Outlook survey released on Wednesday. And two-thirds predict a downturn by the end of next year. US business optimism dropped to a three-year low during the third quarter, the Duke survey said, reflecting a spike in economic uncertainty as the US-China trade war drags on. Just 12% of US CFOs indicated they have become more optimistic about the domestic economy, down from 44% a year ago, according to the Duke survey. The findings are consistent with recent surveys of investors and market signals that show a rising risk of a recession.

The World's Lowest Growth

Pag.36

Global economists predict the world’s lowest growth in a decade.

The world economy is slowing, and it could be headed toward a recession. The Organization of Economic Co-Operation and Development, an intergovernmental economic group, just slashed its forecast for global growth to a decade low.
The OECD projects the world economy will grow just 2.9% in 2019, which would be the lowest forecast since 2009. In 2020, growth is predicted to inch up to 3%. Just 18 months ago, the organization still expected 4% growth.
Global growth at 3% or less constitutes a recession, according to past definitions used by the International Monetary Fund.
The G20 nations are expected to grow 3.1% this year and 3.2% next year, as per the updated outlook. US growth was cut to 2.4% in 2019 and 2% in the following year.
The US-China trade war and its impact on global manufacturing and trade growth are to blame for this bleak forecast, according to the OECD. Brexit also remains a big question mark, and the slowdown of China’s massive economy presents its own set of challenges for the world.

On the move: is the future of transport driverless and shared?

Pag.54

The way we travel around is going to change radically in the next few decades.
The privately owned car – that romantic emblem of autonomy and freedom – has proved too successful. Our cities and suburbs have become congested and air quality has deteriorated, posing a serious threat to our health. As Sven Beiker, managing director of consultancy Silicon Valley Mobility, puts it: “Everyone getting in a two-tonne vehicle to go and get a pint of milk is not sustainable anymore.”
As the global population continues to grow and more people coalesce in and around cities, there is an urgent need for a rethink about how we move. Most in the industry would agree, although some would add “more integrated and seamless” to the list, reminding us that cycling and walking are also important ways to get around.
But while autonomous driverless technology and electric power would seem to be key drivers in this essential transformation, there is still fierce debate over how the various modes of transport will be accessed and owned, and how mobility services will be shared between cities and rural areas.

Hyperloop trains

Pag.56

California just decided to sharply scale back its plans for a high-speed rail artery meant to transform travel up and down the state. But in the desert outside Las Vegas, the transportation ambitions still seem limitless. Here, engineers working for Virgin Hyperloop One are testing a radically different type of mass transit: one that aims to move people and cargo in small wheel-less pods in a vacuum tube at speeds that could exceed 600 miles per hour. Today’s swiftest rail travel, at top speeds less than half as fast, would become a quaint anachronism.
The company, which counts Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Group as a minority investor, is one of several in the United States, Canada and other countries developing hyperloop technology. The concept was promoted by Elon Musk, of electric-car and private-rocket renown, and then offered by one of his companies as open-source technology available to all. It works by propelling pods using magnetic levitation through a low-pressure, near-vacuum tube.
The low pressure minimizes friction and air resistance, greatly reducing the power needed. And because the pods travel in a tube, they’re not subject to shutdowns due to harsh weather, like snow or polar vortexes. We’ve seen this concept before. Libraries used to send book requests to the stacks in pneumatic tubes. Until 1984, a similar network whisked messages around Paris. And a series of underground tubes once dispatched mail between Manhattan and Brooklyn. The concept was even tried with people for three years in New York’s subway. Beginning in 1870, Beach Pneumatic Transit, named for its developer, ran a passenger capsule moved by pneumatic power under Broadway in Manhattan, from Warren Street to Murray Street.

How to make an attractive city?

Pag.74

Big cities are alive with big ideas, and some of those big ideas can be about starting a small business. Small towns, while being a great environment for small businesses, might not have the clientele entrepreneurs need to build a thriving, successful business. Living in a big city where tourists flock to every day creates the perfect opening for your own business. Visit the local restaurants, shops, farmer’s markets, etc., and write about them.
Think of it as a resource that can be used for those who visit, those new to the area, or the forever locals looking for something new to do. Make money through advertising or working with local businesses as an affiliate marketer. Do you ever scroll through Instagram and see all the amazing fashion shots or food photos and wonder how people get them? A lot of times, Instagram influencers hire photographers to do photo shoots of their outfits, cooking or a day in the life of the influencer. If you fancy yourself a photographer and want to break into that business, starting this business in a big city is your best chance. Starting a food truck can be a little more daunting than the other business ideas on this list because of the different licenses and permits required. Once your truck is up and running, you can sell at places like festivals, farmer’s markets or outside local bars after they close to feed hungry customers. These are just some of the great ideas you could apply to make a small business happen in your town.

A modern lifestyle

Pag.76

It’s no big secret that teens have a complex relationship with technology. They are expected to use technology both in and out of the classroom to make the grade, they manage their social lives through various apps and social media platforms, and they use technology to stay organized and on top of their many, many activities. Today’s teens face intense levels of pressure. Sometimes their phone use is tied to recreational activity and can help them relieve stress, but other times they use their phones to keep up with their busy lives. Ensuring that kids’ technology use doesn’t result in more stress for them isn’t an easy task; there’s no clean-cut way to delete stressful technology activity. So how can parent, let alone kids themselves, navigate the often stressful world of tech? Although there isn’t a recognized “smartphone addiction” diagnosis, it’s natural for parents to wonder if a teen’s apparent obsession with a smartphone qualifies as addictive behavior. After all, it can be incredibly frustrating to attempt to hold a conversation with someone when they can’t peel their eyes away from their phone..

Finding a place to live

Pag.94

Living abroad is a privilege not many get to experience - but those that do, realise just how beneficial it actually is. Whether you move to Europe , Asia, America, or any other areas, there’s a chance you’ll have an unforgettable experience. We’ve all heard of terms like reverse culture shock and other experiences that occur after you return back from your adventures abroad. So why does living abroad changes you so much? There’s just something about taking that courage to move abroad in the first place. Stepping into the unknown and just accepting that whatever will happen. Are you moving to a brand-new country? Your day-to-day habits will get challenged. You’ll no longer be able to see your friends every single day and even regular things like ordering coffee become more complex. The complexity is only added if you’re moving to a country with a brand-new language. The challenges are often unpredictable - you just never know what will happen. But you have to go through it and you will go through it. Living abroad brings a new perspective of yourself and the life around you. The change of pace and quality of life, depending on where you move, can equip you with brand new you. On top of that, you’re putting yourself into a brand-new world - into the unknown. No matter what prejudice you had about that world before you moved, you’ll now gain a totally new perspective on the situation.

Owning or renting a house

Pag.96

A lifelong goal of many Americans is homeownership. Although homeownership is high in the U.S. today, it wasn’t always the case. Historically, families either needed to build their own homes or rent a home from someone else.
While both renting and buying have their financial advantages, owning a home isn’t right for everyone. In this article, we explore the reasons why renting makes more financial sense than owning a home.No Maintenance Costs or Repair Bills. An advantage renters have over homeowners is that they have no maintenance costs or repair bills.
When you rent a property, your landlord is responsible for all maintenance, improvement, and repairs. If an appliance stops working or your roof starts to leak, you call the landlord, and it gets fixed. Homeowners, on the other hand, are responsible for all home repairs, maintenance, and renovation costs. Depending on the nature of the repair, it can get quite costly. Access to Amenities Another financial benefit to renting, over buying a house of your own, is having access to amenities that would otherwise be an enormous expense. Luxuries such as an in-ground pool or a fitness center come standard at many mid-scale to upscale apartment complexes with no additional charge to tenants. If a homeowner wants to match these amenities, it would likely cost thousands of dollars for installation and maintenance.
Similarly, condo-owners need to pay monthly fees to pay for access to these amenities. No Real Estate Taxes One of the major benefits of renting versus owning is that renters don’t have to pay property taxes. Real estate taxes can be a hefty burden for homeowners and vary by county—the costs can be thousands of dollars annually. Although property tax calculations can be complex, they are determined based on the estimated property value of the house and the amount of land. With newly built homes getting larger and larger, property taxes can be a significant financial burden. No Down Payment Another area where renters have a better financial deal is the upfront cost. Renters might have to pay a security deposit equal to one month’s rent. However, when purchasing a home with a mortgage, you’re required to have a sizable down payment—typically 20%. Although the exact amount renters need to pay upfront varies from case to case, the total amount is significantly less than the down payment to buy a house. For example, with a 10% deposit on a house that has a market value of $200,000, the buyer would have to put up $20,000 before moving in, and with 20% down, $40,000 would be needed. For those who don’t have the savings to come up with a down payment for buying a home, they might be better off renting.

Life Expectancy

Pag.114

Driven by technological progress, human life expectancy has increased greatly since the nineteenth century. Demographic evidence has revealed an ongoing reduction in old-age mortality and a rise of the maximum age at death, which may gradually extend human longevity 1,2. Together with observations that lifespan in various animal species is flexible and can be increased by genetic or pharmaceutical intervention, these results have led to suggestions that longevity may not be subject to strict, species-specific genetic constraints. By analysing global demographic data, improvements in survival with age tend to decline after age 100, and that the age at death of the world’s oldest person has not increased since the 1990s. Results strongly suggest that the maximum lifespan of humans is fixed and subject to natural constraints.

Internet addiction

Pag.116

Internet addiction is described as an impulse control disorder, which does not involve use of an intoxicating drug and is very similar to pathological gambling. Some Internet users may develop an emotional attachment to on-line friends and activities they create on their computer screens. Internet users may enjoy aspects of the Internet that allow them to meet, socialize, and exchange ideas through the use of chat rooms, social networking websites, or “virtual communities.” Other Internet users spend endless hours researching topics of interest On-line or “blogging”.
Blogging is a contraction of the term “Web log”, in which an individual will post commentaries and keep a regular chronicle of events. It can be viewed as journaling and the entries are primarily textual. Similar to other addictions, those suffering from Internet addiction use the virtual fantasy world to connect with real people through the Internet, as a substitution for real life human connection, which they are unable to achieve normally. What are the warning signs of Internet addiction? Preoccupation with the Internet. Use of the Internet in increasing amounts of time in order to achieve satisfaction. Repeated, unsuccessful efforts to control, cut back or stop Internet use. Feelings of restlessness, moodiness, depression, or irritability when attempting to cut down use of the Internet. On-line longer than originally intended. Jeopardized or risked loss of significant relationships, job, educational or career opportunities because of Internet use. Lies to family members, therapists, or others to conceal the extent of involvement with the Internet. Use of the Internet is a way to escape from problems or to relieve a dysphoric mood. (e.g. Feelings of hopelessness, guilt, anxiety, depression.) What are the effects? Internet addiction results in personal, family, academic, financial, and occupational problems that are characteristic of other addictions. Impairments of real life relationships are disrupted as a result of excessive use of the Internet. Individuals suffering from Internet addiction spend more time in solitary seclusion, spend less time with real people in their lives, and are often viewed as socially awkward. Arguments may result due to the volume of time spent on-line.

Vaccination

Pag.134

Health organizations, doctors, and scientists agree that vaccines are safe and effective.
Despite this, there is a growing movement of parents and caregivers choosing not to vaccinate their children. Anti-vaccination myths are almost certainly contributing to this trend. Many health organizations advise that children receive vaccinations for their individual health and for the health of others. If vaccinations caused more harm than good, they would revise their advice. Reading blog or social media content suggesting that vaccinations may be harmful can be concerning for parents and caregivers who want the best for their children.
Conspiracy theories that link vaccinations to chronic conditions may cause them to question whether vaccinations are safe. The notion that vaccines cause autism is a common and very harmful anti-vaccination myth. This myth comes from a retracted study that appeared in the late 1990s. The authors of this study claimed that receiving the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccination increased the chance of a child developing autism. Vaccination is the safest way to help a child develop immunity to vaccine-preventable diseases. Anti-vaccination myths should not dissuade parents or caregivers from vaccinating their children. Vaccination is necessary to keep the rates of vaccine-preventable diseases low.

The Flat Earth Society

Pag.136

The Flat Earth Society mans the guns against oppression of thought and the Globularist lies of a new age. Standing with reason, we offer a home to those wayward thinkers that march bravely on with REASON and TRUTH in recognizing the TRUE shape of the Earth - Flat. The modern age of the Flat Earth Society dates back to the early 1800s, when it was founded by Samuel Birley Rowbotham, an English inventor. Samuel Rowbotham’s Flat Earth views were based largely on literal interpretation of Bible passages. His system, called Zetetic Astronomy, held that the earth is a flat disk centered at the North Pole and bounded along its ‘southern’ edge by a wall of ice, with the sun, moon, planets, and stars only a few hundred miles above the surface of the earth. After Rowbotham’s death in 1884, followers of his Zetetic Astronomy founded the Universal Zetetic Society. Flat Earth theory spread to the United States, largely in the town of Zion, Illinois where Christian Catholic Apostolic Church founder John Alexander Dowie and later Wilbur Glenn Voliva promoted Flat Earth theory. Voliva died in 1942 and the church quickly disintegrated. Flat Earthism remained in Zion, gradually becoming less popular into the 1950s. The International Flat Earth Society was formally founded in 1956 by Samuel Shenton, a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and the Royal Geographic Society. Shenton died in 1971 and Charles K. Johnson became president of the International Flat Earth Society. Johnson actively and charismatically promoted the Society and, over time, its membership increased to over 3,000. His wife Marjory took an active role in the Society as well, often contributing articles to the Flat Earth Society Newsletter. In 1995, a fire destroyed the Johnson’s home as well as all of the Flat Earth Society’s library, archives and membership lists. Following a long period of poor health, Charles K. Johnson’s wife Marjory Johnson passed away in 1996. He vowed to rebuild the society. Sadly, Charles K. Johnson passed away in 2001 at the age of 76, leaving the Society’s future uncertain. After several years of inactivity, the Flat Earth Society was resurrected in 2004 and remains active today at theflatearthsociety.org. The Society officially reopened to new members on October 30th 2009.

Teens and elders bridge generation gap and digital divide

Millennials in the Workplace Training Video

Pag.158

Millennials might get a bad reputation, they are considered lazy, pampered by their parents, and are known for hopping from job to job quickly, different from people of the previous generations like the Baby Boomers for example, who used to work for the same company for 20, 25, 30 or even more years in a row.
On the other hand, Millennials are idealist, confident, ambitious, goal-focused and achievement-oriented. The American radio show host, author, and businessman Dave Ramsey is a huge fan of this mission-driven generation.

John F. Kennedy Moon Speech

Pag.214

This historic and powerful speech was delivered by President John F. Kennedy on September 12, 1962, against the backdrop of the intense Cold War rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union. At Rice University in Houston, Texas, Kennedy passionately challenged the nation to commit to the ambitious goal of landing a man on the moon before the end of the decade. This iconic speech played a pivotal role in inspiring public support for the Apollo program, a monumental effort that extended beyond the political landscape.

Kennedy's ambitious vision materialized with the historic Apollo 11 mission, which successfully landed astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on the Moon on July 20, 1969. Beyond achieving a historic feat, the Apollo program left an indelible mark on technological advancements and scientific achievement, defining an era of hope, ambition, and progress during the early years of the space race. The JFK Moon Speech remains a timeless and inspiring piece of American history, embodying the spirit of exploration that transcends generations.
